Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD)

If you're self-employed or a landlord, you've probably heard the term "Making Tax Digital" (MTD) floating around. It is HMRC's new system for reporting income from self-employment and rental properties.

Instead of one Self Assessment tax return a year, MTD for Income Tax means keeping your income and expenses in digital software, sending HMRC an update every three months, and then submitting one final declaration, like you used to do with your old tax return.

Who Does It Apply To?

MTD is being introduced in stages:

  • From April 2026 for individuals with self-employed and/or property income over £50,000.

  • From April 2027 for those with income over £30,000.

  • From April 2028 for those with income over £20,000.

HMRC will normally notify you if you need to join MTD.

What Are the Deadlines?

Instead of submitting just one tax return each year, you'll have:

  • Four quarterly updates during the tax year.

  • A final year-end submission to complete your tax position.
